Merox is an acronym for mercaptan oxidation. It is a proprietary catalytic chemical process developed by UOP used in oil refineries and natural gas processing plants to remove mercaptans from LPG, propane, butanes, light naphthas, kerosene and jet fuel by converting them to liquid hydrocarbon disulfides. The Merox process requires an alkaline environment which, in some of the process versions, is provided by an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, a strong base, commonly referred to as caustic. In other versions of the process, the alkalinity is provided by ammonia, which is a weak base.
Over the period of centuries, fossil fuels have not only been catering to our basic energy needs, but also have contributed significantly to the growth rate of civilization. But its ever-increasing consumption rate and rapid depletion of the known reservoirs are a matter of serious concern. Due to the increasing demand for energy and also in view of the deteriorating environment, it has become essential not only to use existing liquid petroleum fuels efficiently but also to explore other sources of energy. The gaseous fuels like natural gas, producer gas, bio-gas, hydrogen, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) etc. are the promising alternative fuels. These gases are also, in general, less polluting. The demand for convenient and environmentally acceptable fuels has been growing continuously. Hydrogen is one such fuel which when burnt either alone or in combination with other gaseous fuels has the potential to meet various energy needs. It also provides environmental advantages.
LPG and Propane is filled under pressure, stored and transported to the consumer. When the cylinder valve is opened reduction of pressure takes place and the liquid turns into gas. LPG and Propane is in gaseous form at ambient temperature and pressure, and LPG is almost twice as heavy as air. Hence, it always settles down to floor level in case of leakage. LPG and Propane is colorless and odorless. Therefore, a distinctive fuel odor is added before it is filled into cylinder to enable easy detection in case of leakage. The research concludes with the solution to address the problem in existing hydro carbon level measuring device inside the road tanker with an aim to improve the occupational health issue to loading and unloading operators, to reduce the revenue loss to the organization and also ratifies the field outcome of the hydrocarbon presence zone against the software results.
